Residential Primary Search: Making the Grab

Lead Instructor: Lieutenant Grant Schwalbe, Estero (FL) Fire Rescue

Each year, nearly 3,000 civilians are killed in structure fires. Despite advances in technology and personal protective equipment, these numbers do not seem to go down. Could our “passive search culture” be a contributing factor? This evolution makes a case for completing an aggressive primary search within the first 10 minutes of fireground operations and focuses on the fundamentals. The student will get instruction and reps on First-Due Engine-Based Search, Oriented Search, and Vent-Enter-Search techniques. The students will also be taught simple drags for victim removal. Students will be more confident in their search and victim-removal skills on completing this evolution. ALL LEVELS
