Anatomy of an Engine Company

Thursday, April 23
Learn the "whys" of engine work, from establishing a "search centric" fire attack in single- and multi-family residential buildings to coordinating an effective advance on complicated commercial fires that challenge our ability to locate and confine them. Topics include navigating risk and uncertainty, using decision making tools like "tactical decision games" to improve crew cohesion, effectiveness, and safety; and how research and data from FSRI, Firefighter Rescue Survey, and others can help build our operational framework and establish our "leader's intent" so that everyone on our fireground can operate on the same page. After delving into the why, we will then move into the "how," breaking down fire dynamics, building construction, and how to stretch and operate various lines to quickly gain momentum on fires from single-family to multi-family and commercial fires that require different tactical and tempo styles. We will cover easy-to-understand size-up processes that quickly point toward direct tactical decisions to help locate, confine, and extinguish a fire while also delving into "go/no-go" reads based on our gear, staffing, and capabilities and limitations.
