Female Mentorship in the Fire Service
Mentorship is more than just a professional courtesy. It's a strategic tool leveraged for the purpose of building competencies, networks, and innovation within our profession. An opportunity exists now to capitalize on the skills subgroups within the fire service can contribute to firefighter development, retention, well-being and performance. Challenges exist, and interest is present within the modern fire service to address fundamental obstacles that impacts the occupational experience of female firefighters and the departments they serve. This is partially why the small percentage of female firefighters making up our national firefighting population continues to be overly represented in injury reports, disputes with employers, and underprioritized in PPE development and health-related equity. This class addresses current barriers to success for this firefighting subgroup as well as empowers and creates the networks that can serve to expedite the cultural evolution necessary to maximize the performance and potential of the modern fore service.
