Fire Behavior and Thermal Imaging: The Basics

Monday, April 20

In sports, teams dedicate countless hours studying their opponents, analyzing tendencies, weaknesses, and strategiesall to gain a competitive edge. In the fire service, we face a far more dangerous opponent, yet we often fail to study it with the same intensity. Two of the most underinstructed yet critical subjects in our field are fire behavior and thermal imaging. Fire behavior has evolved. Thermal imaging is one of the most powerful tools available to modern firefighters, yet it remains one of the least understood. Training is often limited to the basics: how to turn the camera on, change the batteries, and maybe how to scroll though the modes. Too often, education stops there. Most firefighters would be uncomfortable using a tool without proper training. Yet, we routinely do just that with thermal imaging cameras. This class will bridge that gap. These two essential topics deserve more attention, more instruction, and more respect in the fire service.
