Heavy Extrication
This class will help students better prepare for an incident involving semis, heavy vehicles, and buses by discussing vehicle design and construction and exploring how this relates to the incident. These vehicles are constructed much differently than regular vehicles; therefore, normal vehicle extrication techniques will not accomplish the objective of safe patient removal. Students will learn techniques for rescue from side underrides, rollovers, and rear underrides. In addition, students will be introduced to the use of rotating wreckers to assist in the rescue of potential victims. The newest technology will be available for the students to use. Using scenarios from incidents that have happened on the roadway, the instructors will be able to prepare the students for MVAs involving complicated incidents. Most of the students do not have access to the type of props FDIC can offer. Extricating on actual semi cabs will give students the additional skills they may not otherwise get prior to an incident. Working with the tow and recovery industry will give talking points to use with the home department and local wrecker service. This will help foster a working relationship that will only enhance their ability to become better rescuers.
