Into the Wildlands: Fireground Command in the Wildland Urban Interface
Commanding a rapidly escalating wildland fire in the wildland urban interface (WUI) is one of the most complex and high-stakes challenges in the fire service. This class will explore the dynamic, fast-moving environment where first-in officers and chiefs must quickly establish command, make sound decisions, and set the incident up for long-term success. Participants will learn best practices for building strong incident command from the initial response through extended operations. Key topics include establishing effective command presence, applying the risk management process under pressure, predicting fire behavior, conducting structural triage and protection, and implementing perimeter control strategies that prioritize firefighter and civilian safety.
