This lecture highlights the connection between leadership and the mental health of our members. We examine how mental health challenges among first responders go beyond mitigating exposure to traumatic events. Instead, effective support involves fostering a culture of psychological well-being within organizations through strong leadership, open communication, training, trust, and proactive measures. Ensuring our cultures support the optimal performance of our members starts with leaders modeling the behaviors we expect. The presentation will provide case studies from high-performance organizations that have leveraged the power of effective leadership, ensuring that belongingness and vulnerability became cultural norms. In the last few years, PTSD has become a common phrase in emergency services, yet our understanding of its true manifestation, diagnosis, and treatment is not well known. This class will lean on evidence-based research to explain the origins of trauma and, more importantly, the path toward resiliency and growth.
