Maximizing Your Rural Water Movement

Tuesday, April 21
Drafting operations are one of the most fundamental skills that every pump operator should be capable of performing. This skill is critical for pump operators who operate in rural America as well as those who serve in urban areas. Equally important to obtaining a draft using a fire department pumper is knowing how to maximize the drafting setup to allow for higher flow capacities to be achieved when required. In this Hybrid HOT class, students will learn how to efficiently and effectively maximize their flow potential while operating from static water sources. Students will be shown the physical limitations that dictate the flow capacities of modern pumping apparatus. In addition, students will be shown alternative drafting techniques that dont require the use of a primer. Methods for expanding the initial drafting operation to incorporate multiple intakes on the pumping apparatus will also be demonstrated in the field. This will allow for higher flow rates to be achieved from the pumping apparatus or reduce the workload on the apparatus if the flow rate has already been achieved. Also discussed will be advances in rural water technology that allow firefighters to use even the most challenging natural water sources. Students will be introduced to vacuum tanker technology that allows for superior fill rates from the most unsuspecting sources. In addition, students will get to witness how water eductors allow rural fire companies to access water from distant sources. By the conclusion of this class, students will be capable of getting greedy with their water from any static source!
