More Than Just Batteries: Universal Steps to Calls Involving Alternative Fuel Vehicles
As the number and diversity of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) on our roadways grow, so do the risks and complexities for emergency responders. From compressed natural gas and hydrogen to high-alcohol fuel blends and fully electric drivetrains, each presents unique hazards-many of which are invisible, delayed, or easily misidentified. This class introduces a universal, five-step approach that can be applied at any motor vehicle incident, regardless of the fuel involved. Using real-world examples, including the 2024 CNG explosion that critically injured nine LAFD firefighters, this session makes clear that what responders don't know about AFVs can absolutely hurt them. Learn how to recognize hidden hazards like odorless gas leaks, clear-burning fires, cryogenic venting, and thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries.
