Residential Search: Decision Making and Coordination from the Incident Commander to the Recruit Firefighter
The purpose of this class is to get crews and departments on the same page, to decrease the risk to firefighters and civilians. The first half of the day is to work on skills to improve search and rescue: mask up with gloves on, victim drags, tool task assignments and how we use and where we stage them, parallel ladders for rescues, and victims up and out of windows. The second half of the day will use a 1/2 wall house layout to talk about building layouts, decisions on why and where to enter, the priority areas for search, fire locating vs. life locating, improved communication and coordination. We will walk through two-, three-, and four-firefighter searches; entering windows for search; entering doors for search; searching ahead of the hoseline; and searching with water on the fire. Incident commanders will be able to understand where their search companies will enter and how they will move throughout the structure, with less verbal communication and increased accountability.
