The State of Data: Operationalizing NERIS

Monday, April 20
Room 105
A product of the 1973 Fire Prevention and Control Act, NFIRS has been the hub of incident response data for the past 50 years. However, the last major update to the data collection elements came 25 years ago with the release of NFIRS 5.0. While the mission of the fire service has not changed in this time period, the environment to which fire firefighters respond absolutely has. An overhaul to data collection was needed. On January 1, 2025, the National Emergency Response Information System, NERIS, became operational. NERIS will be the operational platform in 2026 and beyond. This workshop will focus on training attendees on how to use the data being collected in the NERIS platform. It will discuss the NERIS incident submission, provided data analytics services and early trends, and the use of the secondary schemasincident analysis (aka investigation) and community risk reduction.
