This class will delve into today's multiple dwelling, specifically the contemporary mid-rise: "the pedestal (podium)" residential/mixed occupancy type building. Due to the increased demand for affordable multifamily housing, the mid-rise trend has gained widespread popularity but lends itself to unique operational challenges and concerns for the fire service. This class will examine the evolution of today's mid-rise and raise awareness of the many challenges and tactical considerations involved during a fire scenario. Often dubbed "groundscrapers" and "toothpick towers," today's mid-rise buildings are defined by their large horizontal footprint and combustible construction. The combustible nature of these buildings, alongside significant life hazards, poses a substantial and unmatched threat platforms and operational risks that warrant discussion.
