Unfamiliar Territory: Preincident Planning for Industrial and Manufacturing Operations

Thursday, April 23
Municipal firefighters who are expected to respond to manufacturing or industrial facilities often are not fully prepared for those situations. Additionally, catastrophic losses can be compounded by a fire department's lack of proactive efforts and a poorly planned response when an incident occurs. From combustible dust explosions to high-voltage electrical fires, firefighters must understand what makes these properties very different from a typical single-family dwelling. To be effective at reducing and preventing personnel and property losses before and after a fire occurs at a manufacturing or industrial facility, we must know and understand what goes on inside. This class will enhance firefighters' abilities to consider a fire or incident that extends well beyond the scope of a room-and-contents or other "bread-and-butter" type response, focusing on those high-risk, low-frequency events that everyone will encounter at some point.
