Workshop: Practical Approaches to Using Autonomous Robotics and Drones in Fire Departments

Wednesday, April 22

Facilitators:
Stephanie Layman, Researcher, UAS Portfolio, NIST Public Safety Communications Research Division
Michael Leo, Captain,  FDNY Robotics
Stefan Truthaen, Head of Strategic Transformation, Berlin Fire and Rescue Services
Joe Caughey, Rosenbauer

This workshop provides a hands-on introduction to the current state and practical use of robotics and autonomy in the fire service. Attendees will examine live and simulated examples of ground robots, drones, and other autonomous tools used for incident response, hazard detection, and operational support. The session addresses steps for evaluating, selecting, and deploying autonomous equipment, as well as key challenges in integration, training, and maintenance. Participants will leave with a realistic understanding of how robotics can improve firefighter safety, incident effectiveness, and future-ready operations.
