In the Line of Duty: Firsthand Lessons from Line-of-Duty Deaths (33TP)

Tuesday, April 13

This program reviews several Line of Duty Deaths from a firsthand experience. Lessons learned or reinforced are explored and discussed by a 45-year urban career firefighter with considerable fireground operations and training experience in one of the largest and busiest fire departments in the country. In addition to the deaths of 26 colleagues during his career, Daniel also served on the 2013 Texas State Fire Marshal's LODD Task Force which included 20 line of duty deaths in a 105-day period involving four different fire departments and incidents.

This presentation addresses the challenges most organizations are struggling with regarding attitude, behavior, beliefs, and cultures that impact or contribute to injury and death in the fire service.

The inspriational delivery of the instructor will impact and influence the students and strengthen and reinforce their focus on their own accountability and how it measures up with the responsibilities the community depends upon from their organization.

Controversial fire attack beliefs, unproven opinions and bias, problematic training, and arguable expectations of the community are reviewed, examined, and conveyed in a manner that the student will feel empowered to improve and perfect their firefighting skills so they can be more aggressive on the fireground while ensuring their own safety and continuing to serve their community.
