Live Fire: Can Confidence - Searching for Life and Fire (09MP)
This hands-on training program is designed to build confidence in one of the most underutilized tools found on nearly every fire apparatus—the 2½-gallon water extinguisher. Often overlooked, the "can" is an extremely effective lifesaving tool when placed in the hands of a well-trained search team operating ahead of the hoseline.
Students will learn how to use the can to rapidly locate, confine, and control fire while conducting an aggressive search for victims. The program emphasizes the critical relationship between water application, door control, and fire isolation, demonstrating how a small amount of water combined with a closed door can dramatically improve conditions for both occupants and firefighters.
Through live-fire demonstrations and practical skill stations, students will witness the impact of the can on pre-flashover fire conditions, gain an understanding of how to place water between the fire and potential victims, and develop the confidence to initiate the fire attack process before the arrival of the hoseline. This class challenges traditional thinking and equips firefighters with proven tactics that increase survivability, improve search effectiveness, and create safer interior operating environments.
