Medical Care After the “Grab”
The fulfillment of a firefighter’s dream is to make that grab. Flames blazing, hoses charged, radios blaring, doors being kicked in to find a citizen on the ground in need of a rescue. This HOT class will combine Fire Rescue response and the medical care needed after the grab. Teams will review basic search and rescue techniques along with medical management of the fire victims. Then Fire teams perform simulated search and removal of a victim of a house fire. But once the victim is out, they become patient. Fire teams transition to the EMS responders and manage the medical scene. From burn management and BLS airway skills to advanced therapies and management of both carbon monoxide and cyanide exposure. All members of the team debrief the call in relation to team dynamics, rescue techniques, and medical management, as burns and inhalation injuries are time sensitive emergencies, and the time that matters is the time on scene doing your task. The program will be proctored by experienced career fire fighters and the medical side proctored by EMS physicians from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and EMS Challenge.
