This presentation is based on the book The Functional Fire Company: Positioning small groups for success and survival. Topics discussed during this workshop include, defining success in relation to functional and dysfunctional operations.  Mindset as well as leadership and operational philosophies will be discussed to build confidence and to better understand individual leadership influence. The presentation will be broken down into the Five Cs of Functional Success... Commitment, Culture, Character, Competence, and Courage. In doing so, a correlation will be made between the evolution of law enforcement reponse to active shooters, and a fire and rescue department's responsibility for delivering aggressive problem solving as well as competing with fire, rescue, and emergency medical problems on a professional level. The commitment segment will discuss the commitments neccessary to achieve essential outcomes... operational coordination, increased contribution at the company level, cooperation, and consistency. The culture segment will discuss the value of culture and its influence in a fire department organization, as well as the cultural layers that exist in every fire department organization. The character segment will discuss how character impacts trust and decision making. The segment on competence will focus on company level training. Several tips and tools will be provided to the attendee to help improve performance at the company level through functional training. Finally the need for courageous leadership in the modern fire service will be discussed.
