Denise L. Smith is a professor of health and human physiological sciences and director of the First Responder Health and Safety Laboratory at Skidmore College and a senior research scientist at the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute. She has conducted more than 50 firefighter fatality investigations for the NIOSH FFFIP.
